Search for Common Ground, (COMITAS PHASE 2) Organizes Three-Day Training on Conflict Reporting Techniques.
By Bashir ADAMU, Jalingo.
Search for Common Ground, under its COMITAS PHASE 2 project, conducted a three-day intensive training on conflict reporting techniques from June 24 to June 26, 2024. The event took place at Yukuben Hotel in Jalingo, Taraba State, Nigeria.
The primary objective of the training was to equip journalists and media practitioners with the skills and knowledge necessary for effective conflict reporting. This initiative is aimed at contributing to the mitigation of conflicts over natural resources between farmer and herder communities in Adamawa and Taraba States.
The training aligns with COMITAS PHASE 2's broader goals of fostering peaceful coexistence and sustainable resource management in these regions.
Participants were introduced to a variety of conflict-sensitive reporting techniques. These included understanding the root causes of conflicts, ethical journalism practices, and the importance of unbiased reporting in conflict zones.
The sessions also covered practical strategies for field reporting, safety measures for journalists, and the role of media in peacebuilding.
Speakers at the event included seasoned journalists, conflict resolution experts, and representatives from local communities. They provided valuable insights into the complexities of farmer-herder conflicts and the critical role that media can play in shaping public perception and promoting dialogue.
Mr. Temisan Etietsola, the lead facilitator, emphasized the importance of accurate and responsible reporting in conflict situations. "Journalists are not just reporters; they are peacebuilders. Their work can either escalate tensions or contribute to peace and understanding. This training aims to ensure that they are well-prepared to handle such sensitive issues," he said.
The training was well-received by participants, who expressed gratitude for the opportunity to enhance their reporting skills. Many highlighted the relevance of the training to their work, especially given the ongoing conflicts in their regions.
Search for Common Ground's COMITAS PHASE 2 project continues to make significant strides in addressing the root causes of farmer-herder conflicts in Nigeria.
By empowering journalists and media practitioners, the project seeks to create a more informed and peaceful society, where conflicts over natural resources can be resolved through dialogue and cooperation.
