Taraba/Adamawa States, Nigeria – Women are at the forefront of peacebuilding initiatives addressing escalating conflicts between farming and herding communities in Taraba and Adamawa states. The initiative, COMITAS II (Contributing to the Mitigation of Conflict Over Natural Resources), highlights the critical role women play in fostering dialogue and understanding in areas strained by disputes over land and water.

With climate change and population growth intensifying competition over natural resources, women have emerged as pivotal agents of change, leveraging their community roles to build trust and promote empathy. Their contributions underscore the power of grassroots efforts rooted in collaboration, humility, and humanity.

Through facilitating dialogues, conducting community outreach, and providing training in conflict resolution, women participating in COMITAS II have become catalysts for sustainable solutions. Their efforts are not only helping to reduce violence but are also strengthening social cohesion in these fragile regions.

At a recent event under the initiative, Mrs. Wonosato Uziel Frank Angama presented a paper on Women’s Role in Peacebuilding. She emphasized, “Women play a vital role in peacebuilding, contributing significantly to conflict prevention, resolution, and sustainable peace. Their perspectives and active participation are indispensable in achieving long-term harmony.”

Additionally, Barr. Lubna Muhammadu Dodo delivered a paper on GBV Referral Pathways: Enhancing Support for Survivors. She explained the importance of coordinated frameworks that ensure survivors of gender-based violence receive timely and effective support. These pathways emphasize collaboration across healthcare, psychosocial, legal, security, and economic reintegration services.

The COMITAS II initiative demonstrates how women’s leadership can drive transformative change, addressing complex conflicts while fostering a culture of peace, coexistence, and resilience in affected communities.
