Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has flagged off a ₦29.69 billion flood and erosion control project aimed at addressing worsening gully erosion and storm-water damage in parts of the state capital.
The project, from Tsohon Kamfani to Gwallagan Mayaki, is being implemented under the World Bank-supported Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) programme.
Speaking at the ceremony, the governor said the intervention is a joint effort between the federal and state governments, noting that 40 percent of the contract sum has already been paid as mobilisation to the contractor, Triacta Nigeria Limited, with funds fully ready for disbursement.
He urged the contractor to deliver the project on schedule, stressing that there would be no excuses for delays.
The governor said the project is expected to restore about 9,842 hectares of degraded land and protect over 213,000 residents from environmental risks.
Stakeholders, including the ALGON Chairman, the District Head of Miri, and representatives of ACReSAL, described the intervention as timely, noting that climate change impacts are already visible across communities in the state.
Rep., National Coordinator, ACReSALBala Mohammed added that the initiative is part of the broader Bauchi Urban Renewal Project aimed at modernising infrastructure and building climate-resilient communities.
