...Promise Transparency, Better Welfare

Candidates seeking elective positions in the forthcoming Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council elections have pledged to promote transparency, accountability and improved welfare if elected.
The aspirants made the commitments when they separately visited the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Bauchi to solicit support ahead of the September 19 election.
Ahmed Mohamed, who is contesting the chairmanship, alongside his running mate, Muazu Hassan, who is seeking the secretaryship, said their proposed administration would operate in line with the NUJ Constitution.
Ahmed, a former Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel who served two consecutive terms, said the team would place members’ interests at the centre of its programmes.
He stressed the need for fairness, respect and inclusion, while promising to ensure that the benefits of the union reached members at the chapel level.
The aspirants also pledged to ensure accountability in the management of union resources and provide opportunities for members to participate in decisions affecting them.
They subsequently appealed to NAWOJ members for their support during the election.
Another aspirant, Isah Garba Gadau, who also served as NUJ Secretary for two consecutive terms, led his team to NAWOJ to seek support.
Gadau emphasised the need for unity and cooperation among journalists, saying the election should not divide members.
He cited the involvement of NAWOJ members in the 2026 Credentials Committee and the inclusion of female journalists in his campaign council as examples of what he described as an inclusive approach.
According to him, the NUJ and NAWOJ constitute one professional family and should work together to promote training, welfare and the collective advancement of journalists.
He appealed to NAWOJ members to support his team in the September 19 poll.
In her response, NAWOJ Chairperson, Mrs Rashida Yusuf, appreciated the aspirants for visiting the association and seeking the support of its members.
She wished all contestants success and encouraged NAWOJ members to participate in the election and vote according to their choice.
Seven positions are up for the contest, including chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer, financial secretary and auditor.
The elected officials will serve for three years.
