As part of activities marking the 2026 World Environment Day, the Jewel Environmental Initiative in collaboration with Gombe State University (GSU), ACReSAL and GOSEPA, has conducted a tree-planting exercise at Liman Model Primary School and the Distance Learning Centre of Gombe State University.
The event, held under the global theme, “Inspired by Nature: For Climate, For Our Future,” brought together representatives of partner organizations, university management, students, and environmental experts committed to promoting environmental sustainability and combating climate change.
Speaking during the exercise, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Gombe State University, Professor Danladi Mohammed Umar, commended the organizers for championing environmental conservation efforts through tree planting and awareness creation.
Also speaking, the university Registrar, Dr. Abubakar Aliyu Bafeto, appreciates the commitment of students and stakeholders towards protecting the environment.
He described Gombe State University as a leading institution in environmental sustainability and agricultural development in the state.
The university management assured participants that the trees planted during the exercise would be properly nurtured to maturity to ensure lasting environmental benefits.
Earlier, the Head Teacher of Liman Model Primary School, Adamu Mohammed Garba, disclosed that the school had lost several trees during recent construction and renovation activities, leaving the environment exposed to excessive heat and other climate-related challenges.
He expressed optimism that the newly planted trees would help restore the school’s green environment, provide shade, and create a more conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning.
Garba also pledged the school’s commitment to protecting and nurturing the trees to ensure their survival.
Representatives of partner organizations and environmental experts at the event to include Ismaila Bima Maigombawa of Jewel Environmental Initiatives emphasized the need for collective action in addressing environmental challenges.
They noted that tree planting, sanitation campaigns, and sustained collaboration among stakeholders remain critical in mitigating the effects of climate change and environmental degradation.
The event featured symbolic tree planting and group photographs, with participants reaffirming their commitment to environmental protection, afforestation, and climate action.
Activities marking the World Environment Day celebration later continued with sanitation exercises across the university campus before students returned to their evening lectures.
