Emir’s Cup 2026 Kicks Off, Promoting Unity, Youth Development

The 2026 Gombe Emir’s Cup, also known as the King’s Cup, officially commenced on Saturday at Pantami Stadium in northeastern Nigeria’s Gombe State, bringing together traditional institutions, football stakeholders, government representatives, and community members in a celebration of sport and cultural heritage.
The annual tournament, which features teams representing Emirates and Chiefdoms from across the state, is aimed at fostering unity, peaceful coexistence, sportsmanship, and youth empowerment through football.
Chairman of the competition Ahmed Shuaibu Gara Gombe, said the competition provides a platform for discovering and nurturing young sporting talents while strengthening social cohesion among communities across Gombe State.
On his part the Emir of Gombe Alhaji Dr. Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III described the initiatives as commmedable while appreciates Ahmed Gara Gombe for uniting the youth in the state.
The opening ceremony attracted football enthusiasts, supporters, traditional leaders, and participating teams, marking the official start of what is expected to be weeks of competitive football action.
The tournament is organized and sponsored by GWG Sports Center Limited under the leadership of Gara Gombe Ahmed Shuaibu, whose sports development initiatives have focused on creating opportunities for young people to showcase their talents and pursue careers in sports.
Observers say the Gombe Emir’s Cup has become one of the state’s notable grassroots sporting events, combining football with cultural identity and community engagement.
Matches are expected to continue in the coming weeks, with participating teams competing for top honors in the 2026 edition of the tournament.
