The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Taraba State Council, on Saturday, October 10, 2026, elected a new Executive Council to pilot its affairs for the next three years.
The elective congress, held in Jalingo, was convened to elect new officials and deliberate on matters affecting the union and the media industry in the state.
According to the communique issued at the end of the congress, 400 ballot papers were made available to chapels for the exercise.
At the end of the poll, Comrade Sule Agyo of TV Taraba emerged Chairman, Bashir Adamu of Liberty TV as Vice Chairman, Zachariah Kemuel Sunkani of Taraba Radio as Secretary, Victoria Roland Andekin of TV Taraba as Assistant Secretary, Akila Yeri Yerima of Worldview Chapel as Financial Secretary, Justine Joseph Kassa of Information Chapel as Treasurer, and Alice Solomon of TV Taraba as Auditor.
The oath of office was administered by the Zonal Vice-Chairman of the NUJ, Baba Zare, who also presented certificates of return to the newly elected officials.
The congress commended the outgoing executives for their three years of service and wished them success in future endeavours. It also lauded members for their enthusiasm and active participation, describing it as evidence that the NUJ remains vibrant in Taraba.
The Credentials Committee was applauded for its professionalism and orderly conduct of the election, with the congress noting that the NUJ has set a commendable benchmark for union elections worthy of emulation by other unions.
On state affairs, the congress expressed concern over the reported decline and possible collapse of the state-owned media institutions — Taraba Television (TTV) and Taraba State Broadcasting Service (TSBS) — and called on the state government to invest substantially in infrastructure to strengthen them.
It further urged members to uphold responsible journalism in the coverage of Taravest and other state activities, support the new leadership, place collective interest above personal considerations, and avoid inflaming the political climate.
The congress also thanked Governor Agbu Kefas for his efforts to change the narrative in Taraba State and prayed for the sustainability of the progress. It noted that the new Chairman and Secretary are members of the National Executive Council (NEC) and will be inaugurated at the next NEC meeting.
The communique was signed by the drafting committee headed by Comrade Joachim Dangana Peters as Chairman, Mrs. Hossana Caleb Daniel as Secretary, and Mrs. Larai Agyo as Member, on behalf of the National President.
It further congratulated the new officials and called on all members to work together in the interest of the union and the people of Taraba State.
