The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration between the media and security agencies to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this in Abuja on Tuesday while declaring open a two-day National Security Summit organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in partnership with the Department of State Services, DSS.
The summit, themed “Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building,” attracted participants from across the country.
Chairing the occasion, Idris described insecurity as a global challenge that requires collective responsibility.
He stressed that the media, as the watchdog of society, must maintain a strong working relationship with security agencies to achieve a peaceful, prosperous, and greater Nigeria.
The minister also assured journalists that their welfare remains a priority for the Federal Government, adding that a nationwide template aimed at improving the welfare of media practitioners would soon be unveiled.
He commended the leadership of the NUJ for initiating the summit and pledged that government would continue to deploy necessary measures to tackle security challenges.
In his remarks, the National President of the NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, said the summit was convened in line with the constitutional role of the media.
He noted that stronger collaboration between the media and security agencies would deepen democracy and enhance national security.
